A video filmed on the beach at Guardamar del Segura has caused a wave of debate online after what appeared to be “sharks” were spotted swimming just metres from the shore.
The footage was shared by content creator Sonia la Tigresa, who is known for her sea and fishing-related posts. She recorded the scene on Saturday, May 2, 2026, during a fishing competition in Guardamar, capturing several large fish moving close to the beach.
Sonia described the sight as incredible and said she had never seen anything like it so near the shore. In her post, she identified the fish as “sharks” and stressed that the video had not been edited.
“I recorded it because otherwise you wouldn’t believe me,” she wrote.
The footage was taken next to her booth during the competition and shows movement in the surf, where large predatory fish sometimes come close to the sand while hunting smaller fish.
But were they really sharks?

Many fishing enthusiasts were quick to offer a different explanation. Several users suggested the fish were more likely to be leerfish, large pompano, or possibly amberjack — species known to approach coastal waters and hunt in breaking waves.
“They’re big leerfish,” one user commented.
Another added that these fish “like to break the waves,” while others agreed they were probably hunting small fish close to the beach.
One commenter even joked: “I think it’s normal to see sharks on the beach. What would be strange is seeing them in your living room.”
Whatever the true identification, the video has certainly caught people’s attention. For many beachgoers, the sight of large fish moving just a few metres from the shore is unusual and surprising. For fishermen, however, it is not necessarily alarming, as predatory species often move close to land when chasing food.
Sonia herself asked her followers what they would have done in her place, adding: “Would you have tried to fish for them?”
Most fishing fans had a clear answer: if they were leerfish or amberjack, plenty would have been tempted to take the opportunity.
The video has sparked a mix of surprise, humour, and local fishing debate. While Sonia believed she may have captured sharks close to the Guardamar shoreline, many viewers think the footage shows large coastal predators hunting in the surf.
Either way, the clip has done exactly what a good sea mystery should do — got everyone talking.
